Summer contemporary art exhibition, South Devon
July has been a busy month for us here at Studio Muus, preparing for our summer contemporary art exhibition at the historic Thurlestone Hotel in a sunny (and very hot) South Hams. At this show - one of a series of art events lined up for 2022/23 - we are proud to be showcasing a selection of work by South West artists from St Ives to Exmouth which will be on display for the whole of July and August. The hotel provides a great art venue, with its incredible coastal light and expansive areas to place some of our large original canvases, as well as some more intimate corners for the smaller pieces and fine art prints. Our first hotel exhibition was 22 years ago at the old Gara Rock Hotel in East Portlemouth in its original form prior to the recent rebuild. We had recently arrived from Bristol, where we ran a small art gallery, and brought with us a collection of evocative watercolours from a Mongolian artist, painted on parchment with natural pigments and depicting the various indigenous cattle and their farmers swathed in sandy barren landscapes.
The subject of this summers show is closer to home - 'Elemental' is a collection of work inspired by nature in all her elemental glory... local coastlines, forests, oceans and skies, with hints at transcendent realms. The opening night was certainly the hottest of openings we have organised with some of the highest temperatures ever recorded in the UK. Thanks go to the hotel for the perfect iced drinks to cool us all down! We were graced by the local community, friends and neighbours as well as some residents at the hotel and have had an excellent response to the work so far. Staff & visitors alike are appreciating how effective the art work is in helping the building to sing. I believe that every place has a story and it's my absolute joy to source & place art which both respects and elevates each location.
